My mother was a grand cook in the Jewish tradition. My father was a world class food shopper, rarely seen coming home without bags of groceries. Sunday mornings often found the two of us at the old Dexter ~ Davison market, weighing oranges in our hands, inhaling melons for ripeness and waiting in line for hand ~ sliced belly lox. Meanwhile at home my mother was stewing onions for scrambled eggs, turning out a fragrant coffee cake onto a pretty plate, and stirring brown sugar into sour cream, awaiting strawberries. Sweet memories, indeed. But my fondest one is the following: Each night after dinner my father turned to my mother and said,
“Gertie, you scored again.”

And then he did the dishes.
